About Influenza screen
What is influenza?
Influenza is a common, highly contagious virus which causes mild to severe flu in humans. Influenza typically infects the respiratory tract, causing coughing and sneezing which facilitates the virus spreading. Infection with influenza can also weaken the immune system, leaving individuals (particularly the elderly) vulnerable to other, secondary infections.
Outbreaks of influenza are relatively common as there are many different viral strains which are constantly mutating and changing to become resistant to vaccines. Influenza viruses A, B, and C infect humans, while influenza D infects pigs and cattle and has not yet been shown to infect humans.
Why take the test?
This test screens for the presence of antibodies to the two most common types of influenza - A and B. It is used to diagnose which type of influenza you are infected with to ensure appropriate treatment.
