About Hyaluronic acid
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is made in the liver but found in most tissues in the body. It is degraded by the sinusoidal cells of the liver and as a result, is a useful marker for liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. Damage to sinusoidal cells reduces their ability to break down hyaluronic acid causing levels in the blood to increase.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of hyaluronic acid in the blood and can be used to help monitor and assess liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.
