About Human herpes virus 8 igg antibodies

What is human herpesvirus 8?

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), is a virus which in some people causes an infection called Kaposi’s sarcoma. People infected with HIV or weakened immune systems are more prone to developing Kaposi’s sarcoma.

Kaposi’s sarcoma is characterised by skin tumours, but tumours can also develop in the lymph nodes and lungs. HHV-8 antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection. The presence of specific antibodies (proteins produced by the immune system to help fight infections) in the blood is a useful indicator of infection.
