About Histoplasmosis
What is histoplasmosis?
Histoplasmosis is an infection caused by the fungus Histoplasma capsulatum (H. capsulatum). The fungus is found in the droppings of bats and birds. Histoplasmosis does not always cause symptoms but particularly affects people with weaker immune systems. Symptoms include a dry cough, fever, chest pain and aching joints. Histoplasmosis antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection. The presence of specific antibodies (proteins produced by the immune system to help fight infections) in the blood is a useful indicator of infection.
