About Hip-check

What is a hip check?

A hip check assesses the level of cobalt and chromium in the blood. These metals are used in metal hip replacements and the presence in the blood indicates a failing hip replacement. Cobalt and chromium are heavy metals found in the natural environment. Whilst cobalt and chromium are essential trace elements for humans, exposure to high amounts can be harmful. A local build-up of cobalt and chromium around the hip joint causes inflammation, bone loss and tissue damage. If the metals enter the bloodstream, organs such as the brain and heart may be damaged.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of cobalt and chromium in the blood and can be used to monitor the release of heavy metals from hip replacements.
