What is herpes simplex virus 1 and 2?
Herpes is caused by two types of herpes simplex viruses (also known as herpes): herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2). HSV-1 typically causes oral herpes and HSV-2 typically causes genital herpes. Whilst both HSV-1 and HSV-2 can be spread by skin-to-skin contact, HSV-1 is often passed on by someone who doesn’t show symptoms, whereas HSV-2 is passed on by sexual contact with a person whose genitals are infected.
Symptoms include cold sores and blisters around the mouth (HSV-1), or sores below the waist, often affecting the genitals and rectum (HSV-2). HSV is common and once caught, the virus will remain in the body for the rest of life without necessarily causing symptoms. Triggers such as stress or sunlight may cause an outbreak.
