About Haemophilus influenza b antibodies
What is Haemophilus influenzae type B?
Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae) type B (Hib) is a type of bacteria which causes serious illness. It is highly contagious and is spread in droplets produced by coughing or sneezing. Hib bacteria cause meningitis, pneumonia, septic arthritis, cellulitis and sepsis. The number of children with meningitis caused by Hib bacteria has reduced since the introduction of the Hib vaccine. Hib antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection. The presence of specific antibodies (proteins produced by the immune system to help fight infections) in the blood is a useful indicator of infection.
Why take the test?
This test detects the presence of Hib antibodies in the blood to help diagnose an infection caused by the Hib bacterium.
