About Haemoglobin electrophoresis

What is haemoglobin electrophoresis?

Haemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells (RBCs) responsible for transporting oxygen. It is important to have the right amount of haemoglobin and RBCs to supply the body with enough oxygen.   Haemoglobin electrophoresis checks for the presence of abnormal haemoglobins which may indicate a blood disorder. Blood disorders associated with abnormal haemoglobins include thalassemia, sickle cell disease and anaemia.

Why take the test?

This test checks the type of haemoglobins present in the blood and can be used to investigate blood disorders such as thalassemia, sickle cell disease and anaemia.
