About Ganglioside gm1 antibodies igg igm

What are anti-ganglioside GM1 antibodies?

Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases.

Anti-ganglioside GM1 antibodies are antibodies which target gangliosides, which are concentrated on the surface of neuronal cells. These antibodies result in the immune system damaging neuronal cells and causing a variety of potential disorders. Anti-ganglioside GM1 antibodies are associated with Guillain–Barré syndrome, dementia, autoimmune conditions and neuropathies.

Why take the test?

This test screens for the presence of anti-ganglioside GM1 antibodies IgG and IgM in the blood. It is typically used to diagnose autoimmune disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome.
