About G6pd (glucose 6 phosphate dehydrogenase)

What is glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase?

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) is an enzyme with important roles in the protection of red blood cells and the activity of the liver, adrenal glands, adipose tissue and mammary glands. The primary activity of G6PD is to maintain levels of coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH).

NADPH is a fundamental component of all cellular life; it is central to the Calvin cycle in photosynthetic plants and is used in the biosynthesis of lipids and nucleic acids. In humans it also protects red blood cells from oxidative damage produced during infection or as a by-product of certain medications by maintaining levels of antioxidant glutathione. Deficiency in G6PD can result in haemolysis (break down of red blood cells), particularly in response to oxidative stress from infection, medicines or foods.

Why take the test?

This test measures the amount of G6PD in the blood. It is typically used to diagnose G6PD deficiency as the cause of haemolytic disorders.
