About Filaria antibodies
What is Filaria?
Filariae are long, filamentous, parasitic roundworms that cause the disease filariasis in humans. The worms reside predominantly in tropical and subtropical countries and they are transmitted to humans through mosquito bites. The most common human disease is lymphatic filariasis, transmitted by the worm Wuchereria bancrofti. The disease may be asymptomatic, with many people in affected countries living with the infection unknowingly. Symptoms of lymphatic filariasis can include elephantiasis (enlarged, thickened skin), lymphedema and recurrent infections associated with a damaged lymphatic system.
Why take the test?
This test screens for antibodies produced by the immune system in response to filariae. It is used to diagnose filariasis. Note that not all infections will produce these antibodies.
