About Factor ii prothrombin (gene g20210a)
What is factor II mutation?
Factor II mutation is a genetic condition caused by a DNA mutation in the gene for prothrombin (called G20210A). Prothrombin is a protein produced by the liver that is important for blood clotting. A mutation in the G20210A gene causes increased production of prothrombin resulting in a higher risk of blood clots. This includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) which can lead to a pulmonary embolism if the clot becomes loose and travels to the lungs.
Why take the test?
This test detects the factor II G20210A mutation. This is important for individuals carrying the mutation who are at an increased risk of clotting.
