About Esr

What is an erythrocyte sedimentation rate?

An erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is a blood test used to check for inflammation in the body. When added to a test tube, erythrocytes (red blood cells) slowly settle at the bottom. A faster sedimentation rate occurs when inflammation is present in the body causing cells to clump. The ESR cannot be used alone to diagnose a condition but may help to confirm a diagnosis, such as arthritis or inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS). It may also be used to investigate unexplained symptoms, such as fever, aching joints and weight loss.

Why take the test?

This test measures the sedimentation rate of red blood cells in a test tube and can be used to investigate inflammatory disorders, such as arthritis or IBS.
