About Eosinophil cationic protein

What is an eosinophil cationic protein?

Eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) is a protein produced by a type of white blood cell called eosinophils. ECP is used as a marker of inflammatory conditions and is thought to have antibacterial and antiviral properties. Levels of ECP increase in response to allergens such as those that cause asthma and rhinitis.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of ECP in the blood and can be used to help assess the severity and monitor the treatment of conditions such as asthma and rhinitis.
