About Elastase

What is elastase?

Elastase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas which breaks down food in the intestine.  It passes through the intestines before being excreted in the faeces. The level of elastase in the stool is an indicator of how well the pancreas is functioning. Lower levels are produced and excreted in a condition called pancreatic insufficiency. Pancreatic insufficiency is often associated with chronic pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, cancer of the pancreas and diabetes mellitus.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of elastase in the blood and can be used to investigate pancreatic insufficiency.
