About Diphtheria antibodies

What is diphtheria?

Diphtheria is an infection predominantly of the nose and throat, that is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae. It is highly contagious, either through person-to-person contact or through the air via coughing or sneezing. Some people may be carriers of the bacterium who can pass it on to others without exhibiting symptoms themselves.

Instances of diphtheria in the UK are relatively rare due to widespread vaccination, it is more commonly acquired from other countries when travelling. Symptoms of diphtheria infection are a result of a toxin released into the body, they include grey-white coating of the back of the throat, sore throat, headaches, swollen glands and difficulty swallowing or breathing.

Why take the test?

This test screens for antibodies produced in an immune response to diphtheria infection. It is typically used to diagnose diphtheria.
