What is deoxypyridinoline?
Deoxypyridinoline (DPD) is an important substance for the structural stiffness of bones.Bones are constantly changing over our lifetime in response to exercise, nutrition and hormones. Every 10 years the entire skeleton is replaced by a natural process called bone remodelling.
Bone remodelling removes old bone and replaces it with new bone. Bone density typically increases during adolescence when bone formation is higher than bone loss (resorption). However, as we age, bone density starts to decline as bone resorption exceeds bone formation.
As people age, lower bone density can lead to osteoporosis putting us at a greater risk of fractures. Bone health can be assessed by blood (bone resorption and formation) and urine (bone resorption) tests. DPD is excreted in the urine and is used as a biological marker of bone resorption.

This test measures the levels of DPD in the urine which can help to understand bone turnover, to diagnose osteoporosis and monitor osteoporosis treatment success.
