What is cytomegalovirus (CMV)?
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus that infects humans and primates. CMV is a member of the Herpesviridae family meaning once infected, the virus remains present for life. CMV is dormant for much of its life and may only present with symptoms upon initial infection (usually in infancy), when it is activated by re-infection with a different strain or when a person has a weakened immune system. CMV is only passed on when the infection is active, potentially passing to unborn babies during pregnancy.
CMV infection presents with flu-like symptoms.
CMV antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection. The presence of specific antibodies (proteins produced by the immune system to help fight infections) can indicate the timing of infection. CMV IgG and IgM antibodies are different versions of antibodies produced in response to a CMV infection. The presence of CMV IgG antibodies confirms an individual has been infected by CMV at some point in their life whilst CMV IgM antibodies confirm a current or recent CMV infection.

This test screens for the presence of CMV IgG and IgM antibodies which are produced in response to a CMV infection. It can be used to determine whether a person has previously been infected with CMV or has a current infection.
