What is cytomegalovirus (CMV)?
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a virus that infects humans and primates. CMV is a member of the Herpesviridae family meaning once infected, the virus remains present for life. CMV is dormant for much of its life and may only present with symptoms upon initial infection (usually in infancy), when it is activated by re-infection with a different strain or when a person has a weakened immune system.
CMV is only passed on when the infection is active, potentially passing to unborn babies during pregnancy. CMV infection presents with flu-like symptoms. CMV antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection. The presence of specific antibodies (proteins produced by the immune system to help fight infections) can indicate the type of infection.
Why take the test?
This test screens for the presence of early CMV antibodies which are produced in response to the initial infection. It is used to diagnose CMV infection, particularly in individuals who are pregnant or have a weakened immune system, at an early stage of the illness.
