What is the Crithidia luciliae antibody test?
The Crithidia luciliae test checks for autoantibodies which target double-stranded DNA (dsDNA), the genetic code present in every somatic cell of the body.
Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In some cases, the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases.
The presence of anti-dsDNA antibodies is associated with more severe forms of autoimmune condition systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and nephritis.
