About Coxsackie antibodies (igm)
What are coxsackie antibodies?
Coxsackieviruses are a type of virus that can live in the gastrointestinal tract (a member of the enteroviruses). There are two types of coxsackieviruses, type A and B. Coxsackie A viruses cause herpangina (blisters in the mouth) and human hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) (different from foot and mouth disease which affects animals).
The effects of coxsackie B viruses can vary from mild to severe including fever, headaches, gastrointestinal distress, aseptic meningitis, pericarditis and myocarditis. Coxsackie antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection with coxsackievirus. The presence of specific antibodies (proteins produced by the immune system to help fight infections) can indicate the type of infection.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of coxsackie antibodies in the blood and can be used to help diagnose a coxsackievirus infection.
