About Copper blood test

What is copper?

Copper is a heavy metal found in the natural environment. Human activity has contributed to further release into the environment through metal processing and burning of fossil fuels. Unlike some heavy metals, copper is an essential trace element for humans and is important for iron regulation, energy production and the formation of connective tissues.

Exposure to high amounts of cobalt is harmful to health and may occur through ingestion, inhalation or skin contact or in Wilson’s disease, a genetic condition which results in a copper build up in the liver, brain and other organs. Acute symptoms of copper exposure include vomiting, jaundice and hypotension. Long-term exposure typically affects the liver, kidneys and brain. Abnormal copper levels are associated with a copper deficiency, Wilson’s disease, anaemia and liver disease.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of copper in the blood and can be used to help diagnose Wilson’s disease copper deficiency, anaemia and liver disease.
