About Coombs

What is the coombs test?

The coombs test (also known as antiglobulin test (AGT)) looks for antibodies which bind to the surface of red blood cells RBCs). Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. The direct coombs test checks for antibodies that are bound to the surface of RBCs which can lead to the destruction of these blood cells.

An indirect coombs test is used to check for antibodies in blood serum which would target foreign blood. It is typically used for prenatal screening and for blood transfusions. Conditions associated with a positive coombs test include autoimmune haemolytic anaemia and haemolytic disease of the newborn.

Why take the test?

This test detects antibodies which are bound to red blood cells. It is typically used to diagnose the cause of anaemia.
