About Cobalt urine test

What is cobalt?

Cobalt is a heavy metal found in the natural environment. It is present in small amounts in rocks, soil and water. Unlike some heavy metals, cobalt is an essential trace element for humans and is an important part of vitamin B12. The body requires vitamin B12 to produce red blood cells (RBCs), the oxygen carriers in the bloodstream and cobalt supplements are sometimes used to treat anaemia. Exposure to high amounts of cobalt is harmful to health and may occur through ingestion, inhalation or skin contact. Acute symptoms of cobalt exposure include difficulty breathing, haemorrhage, nausea, vomiting and skin irritation. Long-term exposure typically affects the lung, thyroid, heart and kidneys.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of cobalt in the urine and can be used to help detect and monitor exposure to cobalt.
