About Clotting check
What is a clotting check?
Blood clotting (coagulation) is an essential process for preventing excessive bleeding after injury. Blood clotting occurs via two pathways, the intrinsic and extrinsic. The Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT) test measures the speed of blood clotting via the intrinsic pathway and in conjunction with a test for the extrinsic pathway, Prothrombin Time (PT), can give an indication of proper or improper clotting. Conditions associated with abnormal blood clotting include haemophilia, antiphospholipid syndrome and sepsis. It can also be used to monitor the effect of blood thinning medications such as heparin.
Why take the test?
This test analysis blood clotting properties using an aPTT test and a PT test. It also measures the level of fibrinogen, a protein which aids in clot formation. This blood check can be used to diagnose the cause of unexplained bleeding or clotting, or to monitor the effect of blood thinning medications such as heparin.
