About Chromium blood test
What is chromium?
Chromium is a heavy metal found in the natural environment. Human activity has contributed to further release into the environment through metal processing. Unlike some heavy metals, chromium is an essential trace element for humans and is important for increasing the response to insulin carbohydrate metabolism and for aiding the metabolism of sugars, fats and protein.
Exposure to high amounts of chromium is harmful to health and may occur through ingestion, inhalation or skin contact. Acute symptoms, most frequently caused by ingestion of chromium, include gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and fever. Long-term exposure, usually from inhalation or skin contact, can cause skin problems, lung cancer and damage to the liver and kidney.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of chromium in the blood and can be used to help diagnose chromium poisoning.
