About Cholinesterase (pseudo)
What is cholinesterase?
Cholinesterase is an enzyme which breaks down choline esters. There are two types of cholinesterases which can be divided based on the type of choline ester they break down. Pseudocholinesterase, or butrylcholinesterase, is found in the blood plasma (the liquid component of blood), liver, muscle and white matter of the brain, whereas acetylcholinesterase is found in red blood cells (RBCs), the lungs and the grey matter of the brain.
The level of these enzymes and their activity is reduced with exposure to insecticides. The level of pseudocholinesterase is also abnormal in pseudocholinesterase deficiency, an inherited condition in which people are not able to break down succinylcholine or mivacurium as quickly as normal.

This test measures the level of pseudocholinesterase in the blood and can be used to help detect and monitor exposure to organophosphorus insecticides. Additionally, patients with pseudocholinesterase deficiency typically show low levels of the enzyme.
