What is Chagas disease?
Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is an infection caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi). Infection is spread by the faeces of triatomine bugs (kissing bugs) which land on people’s skin and is most common in Latin America. Symptoms vary depending on the stage of the infection. During the acute phase, symptoms may include fever, swollen lymph nodes, body aches, fatigue, nausea and vomiting. As the disease progresses into the chronic phase, the severity of symptoms increases due to damage to the heart and intestines.
Symptoms include palpitations, cardiomyopathy, congestive heart failure, shortness of breath, chronic abdominal pain, chronic constipation and difficulty swallowing. T. cruzi antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection with T. cruzi. The presence of specific antibodies (proteins produced by the immune system to help fight infections) can indicate the type of infection.
