What is carbon monoxide poisoning?
Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas that irreversibly binds with haemoglobin in the blood to form carboxyhaemoglobin, removing its essential ability to carry oxygen around the body. Carbon monoxide is generally released from incomplete burning in fires or engines, it is colourless and odourless. If carbon monoxide is inhaled in large quantities then it can lead to illness, loss of consciousness or in extreme cases can be fatal.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, dizziness, confusion, chest pain, nausea and loss of consciousness.
