About Carbohydrate deficient transferrin - cdt

What is carbohydrate deficient transferrin?

CDT is a glycoprotein in the blood that plays a role in iron transportation. While it is present in small amounts naturally, high levels are linked with heavy alcohol consumption. Long term excessive drinking or binge drinking leads to an increase in CDT. Elevated CDT can be detected for several weeks after heavy drinking, meaning it can be used to monitor alcoholism.

Why take the test?

This test measures the carbohydrate deficient transferrin (CDT) levels in the blood. It is used to monitor alcoholism.

Some bodies such as the DVLA require a CDT test of individuals at high-risk of alcoholism to prove sobriety.
