About Calcitonin
What is calcitonin?
Calcitonin is a hormone produced by the thyroid, a small gland in the front of the neck. The hormone is important for controlling the amount of calcium and phosphate in the blood.
High levels of calcitonin in the blood are indicative of thyroid problems including C-cell hyperplasia and medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). C-cell hyperplasia is characterised by increased growth of cells in the thyroid and MTC is an inherited disease characterised by tumour growth in the thyroid.
Why take the test?
This test measures calcitonin levels in the blood and can be used to help diagnose thyroid problems such as C-cell hyperplasia and MTC.
