About C peptide
What is C-peptide?
C-peptide is a substance produced by your pancreas. The pancreas is the organ responsible for insulin production where it is made in the beta cells. These cells release the same amount of c-peptide at the same time as insulin. C-peptide is present in the blood longer than insulin and is a useful marker of insulin production. Insulin production and your body’s ability to use it is altered in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, respectively.
Why take this test?
This test measures levels of c-peptide in the blood and may be used to monitor insulin production in diabetic patients to assess treatment response or to investigate the cause of hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar).
