What is brucella?
Brucella is a type of bacteria which can cause an infection called brucellosis. The bacteria can cause illness in both animals and humans and is typically spread to people who come into direct contact with infected or animals or through eating raw or unpasteurized dairy products.
Symptoms of brucellosis include fever, sweating, fatigue and joint pain. Brucellosis can be treated with antibiotics, but relapses are possible.
Brucella antibodies are produced by the body’s immune system in response to infection with brucella. The presence of specific antibodies (proteins produced by the immune system to help fight infections) can indicate the type of infection.
Why take the test?
This test measures the level of brucella antibodies in the blood and can be used to help diagnose brucellosis.
