What is a blood culture?
Blood is typically a sterile environment, meaning there are no microorganisms such as bacteria or yeast growing in it. The presence of microorganisms in the blood is always abnormal and is known as bacteremia, which can be extremely serious. A blood culture checks to see if there are any foreign organisms present in the blood.
The presence of microorganisms in the blood can lead to conditions such as sepsis, endocarditis and osteomyelitis.
