About Bilharzia antibody confirmation (elisa)
What is bilharzia?
Bilharzia or schistosomiasis is a disease caused by the parasitic flatworm schistosoma. Schistosomes or blood flukes are commonly found in freshwater in Africa and can also be found in areas of South America, the Caribbean, Asia or the Middle East. Infection typically occurs after exposure to immature schistosomes but may not immediately present with symptoms.
Long-term bilharzia can result in damage to major organs including the bladder, kidneys and liver. The immune system will typically produce antibodies against bilharzia which can be detected with clinical tests. Antibodies may remain present in the blood after the infection has cleared or in some cases antibodies are not detected even if the infection is present, making diagnosis difficult.
Why take the test?
This test is used to confirm the presence of bilharzia antibodies in the blood. It is used to confirm a diagnosis of bilharzia.
