About Babesia parasite
What is a Babesia Parasite?
Babesia is a parasite carried by ticks which can infect red blood cells (RBCs). The parasite can infect people through tick bites and causes RBCs to burst. Babesiosis is a rare, potentially life-threatening infection caused by the babesia parasite. Symptoms include headaches, abdominal pain, fatigue and chills. A more severe complication is the development of haemolytic anaemia which results from the destruction of RBCs exceeding production.
