About Arbovirus
What is an arbovirus infection?
Arbovirus is an infection caused by a virus spread by arthropods, a group of insects which bite, such as mosquitoes and ticks. Young and elderly people are at greater risk of infection as well as people in mosquito- or tick-infested areas. Symptoms of an infection can be mild including headaches, sleepiness and rashes, to severe including high fevers, meningitis and encephalitis.
Meningitis (inflammation of the meninges surrounding the brain and spinal cord) and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) are serious complications of a viral infection which require immediate medical attention. The body’s immune system produces antibodies in response to an arbovirus infection and releases them into the bloodstream which allows the infection to be detected.

This test measures the level of arbovirus antibodies in the blood and can be used to help diagnose an arbovirus infection.
