About Apolipoprotein profile

What is the Apolipoprotein Profile blood test?

Apolipoproteins are a group of proteins which bind lipids (fat and cholesterol) and combine with phospholipids and triglycerides to form lipoproteins. Lipoproteins transport fat and cholesterol around the body through lymph, blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Different types of lipoprotein are formed depending on the apolipoproteins they are primarily made from, affecting how they are transported and processed by the body. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or ‘good cholesterol’ for example is primarily made from apolipoprotein A1 (apo A1) and is responsible for removing cholesterol from the blood, taking it to the liver for processing. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or ‘bad cholesterol’ is primarily made up of apolipoprotein B (apo B) and transports cholesterol to different tissues around the body.

While a balance of lipoproteins is important for maintaining a healthy metabolism, excess LDL is associated with arterial plaque build-up and increased risk of coronary heart disease.

Why take the test?

This test measures a variety of factors such as cholesterol, triglycerides and apo A1/apo B to give a profile of cholesterol and heart health markers.
