About Apolipoprotein e
What is apolipoprotein E?
Apolipoproteins are a group of proteins which bind lipids (fat and cholesterol) and combine with phospholipids and triglycerides to form lipoproteins. Lipoproteins transport fat and cholesterol around the body through lymph, blood and cerebrospinal fluid. Different types of lipoprotein are formed depending on the apolipoproteins they are primarily made from, affecting how they are transported and processed by the body. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) or ‘good cholesterol’ for example is primarily made from apolipoprotein A1 (apo A1) and is responsible for removing cholesterol from the blood, taking it to the liver for processing. Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or ‘bad cholesterol’ is primarily made up of apolipoprotein B (apo B) and transports cholesterol to different tissues around the body.
Very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) is considered ‘bad cholesterol’ as it transports triglyceride fats to tissues around the body. The primary apolipoprotein in VLDLs is apolipoprotein E (apo E).
While a balance of lipoproteins is important for maintaining a healthy metabolism, excess VLDL is associated with arterial plaque build-up and increased risk of coronary heart disease.
Why take the test?
This test measures the apolipoprotein E content of the blood. It is used as an indicator of ‘bad cholesterol’ as a measure of cardiovascular health.
