About Antithrombin iii

What is antithrombin III?

Antithrombin III is a protein produced by the liver involved with regulating blood clotting through preventing coagulation. It is sometimes administered to reduce clotting during operations. Antithrombin III deficiency can be either hereditary or acquired and usually presents as blood clots in the veins (thrombosis). Antithrombin III is the target for blood thinning medication heparin, atypical response to heparin can indicate a deficiency.

Problems associated with abnormal antithrombin III include thrombosis, phlebitis and pulmonary embolism.

Why take the test?

This test measures antithrombin III functionality and quantity in the blood. It is used to diagnose unexplained blood clotting or atypical response to blood thinner heparin.
