About Antistreptolysin antibody titre
What is antistreptolysin O antibody?
Group A streptococci are a family of bacteria commonly found on the skin and in the throat. While it is normal to have these bacteria, they can cause infections ranging from mild impetigo to more severe diseases such as toxic shock syndrome. When group A streptococci enter the body, they release a toxin called streptolysin. When exposed to streptolysin, the immune system releases antibodies called antistreptolysin O (ASO). Testing for this antibody over a number of days or weeks can be used to monitor and diagnose streptococcal infections. Diseases associated with group A streptococcal infection include strep throat, impetigo and pneumonia.
Why take the test?
This test measures the amount of ASO in the blood. It is used to diagnose streptococcal infections and if repeated over days or weeks can monitor the immune response to this infection.
