What is antistaphylolysin antibody?
Staphylococcus is a genus of bacteria commonly found on the skin and in the nose. While it is normal to have these bacteria, they can cause infections ranging from mild impetigo to more severe diseases such as osteomyelitis. When staphylococci enter the body (often through cuts and grazes) they release a toxin called staphylolysin. When exposed to staphylolysin, the immune system releases antibodies called antistaphylolysins. Testing for this antibody over a number of days or weeks can be used to monitor and diagnose staphylococcal infections.
Diseases associated with group staphylococcal infection include impetigo, osteomyelitis and infective endocarditis.
Why take the test?
This test measures the amount of antistaphylolysin in the blood. It is used to diagnose staphylococcal infections and chronic osteomyelitis. If repeated over days or weeks, this test can monitor the immune response to these infections.
