About Antinuclear antibodies

What are antinuclear antibodies?

Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are antibodies which target and attack the nuclei of the body’s own cells, causing systemic inflammation.

Antibodies are proteins typically produced by the immune system to target and protect against harmful entities. In rare cases the immune system can malfunction, producing antibodies which target and attack the body’s own cells. Disorders caused by this process are called autoimmune diseases and can be potentially life-threatening.

Diseases associated with the presence of ANAs include lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome and rheumatoid arthritis.

Why take the test?

This test checks for the presence of ANA. It is typically used to diagnose an autoimmune condition such as lupus.
