About Angiotensin converting enzyme
What is angiotensin converting enzyme?
Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) is an important protein for controlling blood pressure. It acts on other proteins to start a process of artery constriction which in turn increases blood pressure. Drugs that block the function of ACE are used to treat high blood pressure.
The lungs are the main source of ACE and high levels of ACE might indicate a problem with the lungs. ACE levels are increased in over half of sarcoidosis patients. Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory condition characterised by the development of granulomas, clumps of inflammatory cells, in the lungs or other organs including the skin.
Symptoms of sarcoidosis include a cough, shortness of breath and fatigue.
Why take this test?
This test measures ACE levels in the blood and can be used to help diagnose sarcoidosis and monitor the condition and treatment.
