About Androstenedione
What is androstenedione?
Androstenedione is a “male” sex hormone (an androgen) produced by the testes, ovaries and adrenal glands. It is an important precursor to testosterone and oestrogen but possesses weak activity itself. Sufficient androstenedione in children is important for sexual development.
Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health.
Excess androstenedione in men affects the balance of testosterone and oestrogen. This may lead to physical changes such as breast enlargement and oily skin. Androstenedione is also important in women for oestrogen production; women may experience hirsutism, a disorder characterised by excessive hair growth, and acne. Too little androstenedione will stint the sexual development of both boys and girls.
