About Amylase isoenzymes
What are amylase isoenzymes?
Amylase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas and salivary glands to break down the food you eat. The pancreas is part of the digestive system and is the greatest producer of amylase. Too much or too little amylase can indicate problems with the pancreas.
Elevated levels of amylase may be indicative of acute pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), cancer or infection. Isoenzymes can help determine the source of the problem. Isoenzymes are different versions of the enzyme found in different tissues - a slightly different version is produced by the pancreas compared to the salivary glands. If amylase levels are too high, discovering which isoenzyme is causing this reading provides information about the source of the problem.
Why take the test?
This test identifies the source of high levels of amylase by measuring the levels of amylase isoenzymes present in the blood, helping to distinguish between pancreatic and salivary amylase.
