About Amoebic antibodies
What are amoebic antibodies?
Amoeba are tiny, single-celled organisms which are sometimes harmful to humans. Parasitic amoebas such as Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) cause infections such as dysentery (amoebic dysentery or amoebiasis). Such infections are most common in tropical areas with poor sanitary conditions.
People can become infected with E. histolytica through contaminated food or water, or through contact with faecal matter of someone infected with E. histolytica.
The majority of people infected with E. histolytica will not present with symptoms. However, in some cases E. histolytica can cause loose stools, stomach cramps and in more severe infections can cause bloody stools, abscesses and damage to other tissues including the brain.
People infected with E. histolytica typically only take a few weeks to recover.
