About Ammonia

What is ammonia?

Ammonia is a waste product made by chemical reactions occurring naturally in your body’s cells and gut bacteria. The liver is responsible for breaking down harmful chemicals and converts ammonia into urea. Urea is then processed by the kidneys and excreted in urine.

Ammonia can build up in the body if it can’t get rid of urea causing confusion, tiredness and serious health complications such as brain damage. The underlying causes of high ammonia include liver and kidney disease.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of ammonia in the blood and can help to diagnose causes of elevated ammonia such as Reye syndrome, urea cycle disorders and hepatic encephalopathy.
