About Acth

What is adrenocorticotropic hormone?

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. ACTH is released into the bloodstream where it travels to the adrenal glands to stimulate the release of cortisol.

Hormones are chemical messengers used by the body to respond to internal and external influences. The activity of hormones must be finely regulated to produce the desired physiological effect. This regulation is typically coordinated by complex interactions between several different hormones. Both excessive production and a deficiency in the production of steroid hormones can cause ill health.

The most common disorders associated with ACTH are a result of abnormal cortisol levels. Elevated cortisol levels are associated with Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of ACTH in the blood and can be used to help diagnose Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease and congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
