About Haemoglobin

What is haemoglobin?

Haemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells (RBCs) responsible for transporting oxygen. It is important to have the right amount of haemoglobin and RBCs to supply the body with enough oxygen.   Too much or too little haemoglobin may indicate health implications. Anaemia is a common blood condition characterised by low levels of red blood cells (RBCs) or haemoglobin. Anaemia can cause symptoms including fatigue, weakness and pale skin. In contrast, high levels of haemoglobin are associated with polycythaemia in which your body produces too many RBCs. Polycythaemia can result in a heart attack or stroke.

Why take the test?

This test measures the level of haemoglobin in the blood and can be used to detect and assess anaemia and polycythaemia.
